Eurostar turns to French drivers as UK strikes loom
70 drivers for the British Airways' high-speed train service, Eurostar, will begin a two-day strike at midnight tonight, followed by another on December 26th, interrupting Christmas shopping, ski trains, and Boxing Day. The drivers amount to about 40% of the workforce, meaning that Eurostar will be able to continue operations but will have to switch over some of their French and Belgian drivers to UK duties in order to maintain a full schedule. The British workers, who drive through multiple European nations, are concerned about the value of their meal allowances, which have declined significantly as the pound as faltered in relation to the euro. Negotiations stalled yesterday after a compensation offer by the company, which was rejected by drivers. 20 train security personnel, represented by a different union, chose to accept the compensation offer, and so will not be joining the strike action tonight.
