Eye Opener: Airport security union fight looms
Labor history was made Thursday when two federal unions met for the first time with Transportation Security Administration officials to discuss the possibility of making collective bargaining an option for employees. Currently, TSA workers can be recruited by unions, but no labor organization is allowed to represent them in collective bargaining negotiations. Both the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) and the National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU) are hoping to win the right to do so. Both unions have criticized TSA?s pay-for-performance and testing systems. These topics, and others, including leave policies and disciplinary procedures, can be found on the agenda for the upcoming talks. If TSA allows employees to officially unionize, it?s expected to be a Herculean fight to the finish between AFGE and NTEU.
