Facing labor shortages, businesses urge aid for undocumented workers
Kansas farmers and businesses say that they have trouble finding workers to take jobs. Unemployment in parts of Kansas was less than 4% at the end of last year, and employers say that even with good salaries and benefits they cannot find workers. One source of labor has been immigrants, especially from Mexico and Vietnam. Groups are working to increase the legal ways to hire immigrant workers. Other states have also introduced measures to increase employment issues and many states are asking the government to reform visa programs to allow for more workers. Advocates for more legal immigrant laborers face opposition from those who are against illegal immigration, and see these programs as a gateway.
