Farms hit by labour shortage as migrant workers shun 'racist' UK
The director of a major agricultural recruitment company has stated that the recent shortage of migrant workers in Britain is largely a backlash from Brexit. Since the UK voted to leave the EU, the pound has depreciated greatly, and overseas workers have started to believe that the UK is xenophobic and racist. The shortage comes at a critical time, as crops will be left in the field without workers to pick them. Some farms rely almost exclusively on migrant labor, and over 80% of farmers in the UK reported increased difficulty recruiting workers this year. Although the immigration minister has dismissed the issue as a scare story, prices for fruits like strawberries and raspberries are expected to jump 35%-50% without overseas workers.
