Farmworkers, tomato growers reach landmark deal
The Florida Tomato Growers Exchange and the Coalition of Immokalee have signed a deal that will improve working conditions and pay for tomato pickers. The workers will get one penny more per pound. The coalition has been pressing growers and consumers to pay the workers more. In 2005 they convinced Taco Bell to pay more per pound of tomatoes so that the growers could pay the workers more. Other companies agreed to similar deals, but growers refused to pay more.
