Fast Food Strike Progress Measured in Pennies, Not Dollars
Thousands of fast food workers walked off their jobs today in over 150 U.S. cities and in more than 30 other countries in a demonstration of malcontent with low wages and in many cases the actions taken by employers to prevent unionization. The protests were coordinated by Fast Food Forward, which said that direct results were slim, fewer than a dozen instances over the past year where walkouts that the organization led resulted in higher wages. The group stated that it is holding the protests as much for the impact on single employers as for the awareness and impact in the communities where the fast food workers live. Although the one-day strike may not seem to have the tenacity of unionized strikes, it is catching global attention and reminds workers, businesses, and the media of labor action before ?big business? and ?big labor?.
