Federal labor officials are going after Tesla over alleged workers' rights violations
The National Labor Relations Board has formally filed a complaint against Tesla, the prominent electric automaker led by controversial CEO Elon Musk. The NLRB charged the company with interfering with employee union organization efforts. The complaint cites various instances where organizers were instructed by management to obey restrictive confidentiality agreements, were intimidated into abandoning unionization efforts by HR and security employees, and were thrown out of the company’s Fremont, California car factory for attempting to hand out informational leaflets to other employees. In addition, employees bolstering the complaint claim that they are frequently subject to unfair working conditions, being forced to work long hours in a facility riddled with safety issues. Tesla has vehemently denied these accusations and has released a statement accusing the United Auto Workers of using this complaint for publicity amidst declining membership in the union. Nevertheless, Tesla has until the 14th of September to respond to the NLRB’s charges and attend a hearing with an administrative law judge in Oakland, California.
