Federal workers get millions in student loan relief
Some federal workers and congressional staff are likely to be unaffected by the expiration of a 2007 law that cut interest rates on student loans in half. The program was created ten years ago to attract top talent to government jobs. Congress is estimated to have spent almost 20 million last year to pay down staffers? student loans. Advocates of the program maintain that it is necessary in order for the government to attract candidates that could otherwise be paid upwards 20 to 100% more in the private sector.
