Fight for $15 group, union push to elect pro-labor Democrats in Michigan
In advance of the upcoming 2018 gubernatorial elections, the Service Employees International Union and the Fight for $15 organization are combining to get pro-labor candidates elected across the Rust Belt states. The effort, which will specifically target Michigan, is expected to top $100 million and will include a massive "get out the vote" effort in states where labor unions have been weakened by static minimum wages and right-to-work policies. The Michigan campaign will launch with a Labor Day March next Monday and will include several announced Democratic gubernatorial candidates. Michigan's current governor Rick Snyder signed right-to-work legislation in 2012, resulting in a drop in the number of unionized workers in the state, as well as a correlating drop in fundraising for Democratic candidates in state and local elections.
