Fight for 15 rallies for minimum wage hike
Hundreds of fast-food workers held the a convention in Chicago's Villa Park over the weekend as part of the Fight for 15 movement to raise the minimum wage to $15. The movement, largely underwritten by the Service Employees International Union, has seen strikes and similar demonstrations already in several major cities across the United States. In addtion to the higher minimum wage, the SEIU's goal is to unionize fast food employees, a difficult task in an industry where most restaurants are owned by franchisees and with such a high turnover rate. Workers at the convention hoped the turnout will inspire similar events in other cities to keep up the movement's momentum.
