Filipino hospital workers win nearly million-dollar settlement in California English-only case
About 70 nurses and medical staff at a California hospital have won a $1 million settlement over a rule requiring on English to be spoken at work. The workers said that the rule was only enforced for Filipino workers, and that others were allowed to speak in their native languages. The hospital said that the rule was necessary for patient care. The hospital policy is still in place, but has been amended, and the hospital will have to implement changes as part of the settlement to improve policies around harassment and discrimination.
