Allina Health System is one of the main healthcare providers in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area and it recently laid off hundreds of workers due to unforeseen financial challenges. Most of the employees who were let go were not medical staff, and Allina Health stated that it will provide affected workers with severance pay, outplacement resources, and other benefits. Other Allina Health projects have been stalled because of these financial issues, and plans to construct a replacement hospital for a nearby medical center have been halted. The healthcare system has only recently operated at positive margins and was operating at a large financial loss in the first quarter of this year.
