Fired Agency Officials to Defend Reinstatements at D.C. Circuit
A federal appeals court will hear arguments on whether to block rulings that reinstated two independent agency officials, Gwynne Wilcox of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) and Cathy Harris of the Merit Systems Protection Board (MSPB), who were fired by the Trump administration. The administration argues that the president has broad authority to dismiss agency board members, while lower courts ruled the terminations were illegal based on longstanding legal precedent. The outcome could determine whether these agencies can maintain quorum and continue operations while the cases proceed. Legal experts warn that a ruling favoring Trump’s position could have sweeping consequences for the structure of independent agencies.
