Firefighters in Contract Accord
The Uniformed Firefighters Association, which represents 8,900 firefighters in New York City, has reached an initial agreement with the city for a two-year contract. The Union also renegotiated wages for a prior contract based on a reopener clause allowing them to do so in the event that another uniformed union attained better terms. The resulting agreement gives firefighters a retroactive wage increase for 2004 through 2006, and an additional 4% wage increase per year from now until 2010. The contract is consistent with the city police sergeant's agreement, as expected considering the common practice of pattern bargaining in New York.
