Firm: GM-Chrysler deal may cost up to 35,000 jobs
With GM talking to Chrysler and lobbying Washington for funds, it seems more and more likely that GM will take over the failing Chrysler LLC, which currently employs 49,000 Americans. According to a Michigan consulting firm, this takeover could mean the loss of 25,000-35,000 jobs. Others argue though that even more jobs would be lost if Chrysler were to disappear or be broken up. The state of Michigan, which houses Chrysler headquarters, faces the worst job cuts: a predicted 8,000-10,000 factory job losses as well as the vast majority of the 10,000-15,000 white collar jobs. The remaining 12,000 factory job losses will affect several other Midwestern States.
