Flint schools lay off 91 teachers and staff after approving new labor contracts
The Flint School District, in Michigan, has just agreed to new contracts with three unions. The contracts contained more than $6.6 million dollars in cuts as the district attempts to grapple with a $10.4 million budget deficit. Although the school district employees agreed to massive cuts to their benefits, their salaries remain intact. In the same day that the board of education approved the new contracts, it also voted seven to zero to lay off 91 teachers and staff members to attempt to further shrink the budget gap. The unions and board of education are continuing to work together to meet educational goals while working through 65 retirements, the layoffs, and the cuts.
