Florida teachers work at last year's salaries amid tight state budget
In the wake of state and school budget problems, most Florida teachers have yet to receive a pay increase for this year, and most negotiations with unions have either failed or been postponed. Only 13 out of 67 districts have reached agreements on wages, though any increases at all have been as small as 1%. Administrators claim that massive budget cuts are preventing them from raising wages for teachers, while union officials contend that districts have extra cash on hand that could be used for pay increases. The budget issues are also resulting in layoffs and fewer programs.
