Floyd Norris: Risk-taking for workers: A new day
Employees are increasingly being asked to handle their own pension and benefit plans, markedly shifting the risk of benefit investment from companies to workers. Some employers have gone so far as to no longer even offer their workers defined benefit pension plans, as exemplified by Hewlett-Packard. Instead, most private-sector workers now get defined contribution pension plans, which shifts the investment risk entirely onto the employees themselves.
