For UFW, Contracts Are Give and Take
In the years since the UFW?s peak, growers have negotiated new contracts allowing them to hire nonunion employees through subcontractors, and often to bypass strict seniority rules for hiring and promoting workers. The UFW has also accepted arrangements that allow employers to pay workers differently for similar labor, while their numbers decrease and their members shift to different crops.
