Ford says UAW deals bring work back to its plants
In a 2007 contract, Ford and the United Auto Workers agreed to cut wages to $14 for new workers who would help assemble parts in American factories. Ford Americas' president said that the agreement helped them be competitive in bringing back jobs to the U.S.. He also said that by making things in Ford plants, they can be assured of the quality of the parts. The company has already brought about 1,340 workers into 24 U.S. plants, and plans to bring around 635 more by 2012. The contract in 2007 was for 1,559, and Ford's plan is more than 25% greater than that figure. The company has so far filled the jobs by recalling laid off workers, many of whom are paid more than $14 an hour. However the company says that bringing work back into the plants makes sense in the long run.
