Ford, union to resume talks on cost-cutting
The Canadian Autoworkers (CAW) union and the Ford Company of Canada will return to the negotiating table next week, after several weeks of recess. Talks began last month but were halted after a week and half to give both sides a chance to share ideas and financial information. The talks seek to lower labor costs, but CAW president Ken Lewenza says that little progress has been made. The company decries the high labor costs in Canada, while the union hopes for increased job security. Experts say that Ford needs concessions from the union to stay alive, and that the automaker has been at a disadvantaged ever since GM employees agreed to concessions, and Ford did not.
