Foreign Farmworkers in Canada Fear Deportation if They Complain
Migrant farmworkers in Canada have been forced to work under poor conditions, unable to speak out for fear of deportation. Canada’s seasonal worker program was set up to address endemic labor shortages within the agriculture industry, but workers are often left vulnerable to exploitation, denied labor benefits they are entitled to, and deprived of basic protections under Canadian law. The workers’ home countries also often side against their own citizens in disputes so that employers will continue to hire workers from that country in the future. Although the program has been successful for some, many continue to work in unsafe conditions without complaints so they will not be barred from the program in the future.
