Former Factory Owner Sentenced to Prison
In what was the biggest human trafficking case in U.S. history, a former garment factory owner convicted of enslaving, starving and beating his workers in American Samoa was ordered to pay $1.8 million in restitution and sentenced to 40 years in prison. The factory made clothes for J.C. Penny and other retailers before it was closed in 2001 by the National Labor Relations Board and the Department of Labor. The factory owner, Kil Soo Lee, has appealed the ruling.
