France Unveils Contentious Labor Overhaul in Big Test for Macron
Amid fierce controversy President Emmanuel Macron unveiled his plan to overhaul France’s labor code. The plan, which was officially announced today, is intended to boost France’s economy and reduce unemployment. The new labor code will take effect next month and makes it easier for employers to higher and fire workers and allow employers in some cases to negotiate with workers at the firm level, rather than adhere to industry-wide agreements. The reforms to France’s labor code have been anticipated for a while, and it has received a huge amount of opposition from labor unions and leftist groups who say Macron has gone too far in rescinding worker’s rights.
