France’s Labor Minister, a wealthy business exec, presses changes on unions
France’s labor minister Muriel Pénicaud, former human resources executive and the country’s wealthiest cabinet member, is working to implement a “flexible security” labor model that gives companies more freedom to hire and fire employees. The plan is part of a campaign spearheaded by President Macron to renew France’s economy. Pénicaud has been a strong force in implementing such changes, throwing out widely valued parts of the 3,300-page rulebook established following the French Revolution. Importantly, she decentralized industry-wide collective bargaining last year, allowing companies to reach separate deals with workers.
