Furious, American's Unions Talk of New Votes
In light of American Airlines' disclosure of major new benefits to top executives as flight attendants were finishing a vote on concessions to keep the airline out of bankruptcy (see WIT's for April 17 and 18, 2003), the Association of Professional Flight Attendants announced Friday that a revote will be held. The Transport Workers Union representing ground crews followed suite yesterday, and the board of the Allied Pilots Association is strongly considering holding a revote if the other two unions re-ballot their members on the concessions. While CEO Donald Carty has eliminated some of the offending benefits and apologized for the timing of the disclosure, the company has insisted that the concessions are binding---an assertion that labor law experts have said is not backed up by the law.
