Furloughs are back - court stays judge's order
Several tens of thousands California state employees at agencies like the Department of Motor Vehicles will take yet another unpaid day off from work this Friday as a court continues to contemplate the legality of the furloughs. Last week, an Alameda County court ordered the furloughs, which are indefinitely scheduled for the first three Fridays of every month, halted, ruling that, under state law, the governor cannot make across-the-board cuts to state employee work weeks. However, the governor was granted his request yesterday, by the First District Court of Appeals in San Francisco, to keep the furloughs going while the court reviews his argument for the cutbacks. The furloughs will remain in effect at least until April 7, the day by which union leaders are required to have submitted counter arguments. Approximately 65,000 workers are affected by the furloughs.
