G.M. and Union Reach Tentative Agreement
The United Automobile Workers union and General Motors reached a landmark agreement early today, ending a two-day strike. The key provision of the new contract is a health care trust that would get GM?s vast liability off its books, while workers and retirees would receive their current coverage until the trust is put in place. The deal was announced by the company and the union in separate statements. The UAW had walked out on GM on Monday morning, and production resumed this afternoon at factories across the country. The agreement included a memorandum of understanding to establish the independent health care trust, as well as other changes to the national agreement.
