Garment workers demanding higher wages clash with police in Bangladesh, dozens injured
Over 200 factories were closed and over 80 people were injured over the course of the past two days of Bangladeshi garment workers? protests. Thousands took part in the protests over wages as low as $66.25 per month, a government approved raise in minimum wage, but still the lowest minimum wage in the world. Workers threw rocks at police and demanded a minimum of $100 per month. Bangladesh has the world?s second largest garment manufacturing sector and employs about 4 million people. The riots and strike follows several unsafe building incidents over the past year killing over 1,200 people as well as a series of strikes over this past summer.
