Gatehouse paper chain to cut salaries 8 percent
Newspaper publisher Gatehouse Media, Inc. announced recently that it would reduce workers' salaries, in the most recent round of bad news for the newspaper industry in the Internet age, and the recession. The company will cut salaries by an average of 8% for almost all of it's New England workers, about 1,500 people. Gatehouse, which reported a $673 million loss last year, hopes to save money but still avoid making layoffs by reducing workers' salaries this year. The salary cuts will save the company a projected $2.5 million and over 100 jobs. The company is furthermore negotiating salary cuts with unionized workers at three New York State-based papers. Salary cuts, from 7% to 15% are slated to begin Monday.
