German labor unions and government reach pay increase deal after countrywide strikes
German public sector employers came to an agreement with unions early on Wednesday on a contract for roughly 2.3 million workers. The workers’ will see an increase in wages of 7.5 percent over the next two and a half years, a retroactive 3.09% increase beginning March 1, and another 3.09% increase beginning April 1. Workers at the lower end of the pay scale will also receive a one-time payment equal to $309. The deal was reached following three full days of talks and a countrywide strike threat last week that resulted in hundreds of flight cancellations.
