German public-sector workers to step up walkouts in dispute over pay
A German union says that it will continue striking to pressure the government to concede to the pay increases the union has asked for. Ver.di, which represents public sector workers in Germany, has asked for a 6.5% pay increase for 2 million workers. Earlier this week the union rejected an offer of 3.3% over two years. 130,000 workers staged walkouts last week, and the union says that strikes will intensify. The government says that they are concerned about the effect the pay increase would have on the economy.
