German Trade Unions set for welfare showdown
Tens of thousands of German trade unionists are expected to take to the streets tomorrow to protest Agenda 2010, which will cut welfare payments, loosen job protection rules and reduce healthcare benefits. The union movement is divided over strategy towards the reform plans, but some hope the street protests will serve as warning to Chancellor Schroeder that the program needs to be changed. Others are more actively seeking compromises with the Chancellor.
