Ghana bans recruitment of workers to Gulf countries to curb abuses
In response to increased reports of abuse of migrant workers, the Ghana government has instructed the Labour Department not to issue further licenses to employment agencies. Human rights activists have pushed for a permanent ban on visas for travel to the Gulf altogether, where the abuse is most prevalent. Over 2,000 Ghanian women in the Gulf were lured in by unlicensed recruitment agencies, a report from 2015 found; they were promised lucrative work but instead subjected to sexual molestation and inhumane treatment. This left mistreated workers stranded in these foreign countries without the means to return home. This is a widespread issue in the Gulf, where millions of migrant women seek domestic work through fake recruitment agencies and become victims of unregulated working conditions and abusive treatment.
