Giant may sell Maryland warehouse; union fears 500 jobs may be endangered
The Teamsters Local 730, representing Maryland warehouse workers for Giant Foods, Inc. wait nervously as the company decides whether to sell its warehouse in Jessup, Maryland. The union fears that such a move could endanger up to 500 jobs. Giant Foods has already tentatively agreed to a sale, which the union says they were not aware of until last week, and which is in violation of their contract. Giant operates two warehouses in Jessup but is selling only one - according to the union, the company cannot sell only part of its business in the area. A similar situation occurred in 2005, when almost 500 employees did lose their jobs - the union is worried that if the warehouse changes hands, its employees may be out of luck, especially when their contract expires next year.
