Gillard slams teachers banning tests
The Australian Education Union voted unanimously today to boycott nationally administered tests next month in protest of the government's My School website, which the union says posts harmful 'name and shame' scores tables that brand students as failures. The website was created in January and has been vocally opposed by teachers unions ever since. Education Minister Julia Gillard has called the proposed boycott, 'selfish' on the part of the teachers union, an opportunistic bid to impose union ideology on parents and students. The government is currently considering using parents to assist with test proctoring if in fact the teachers do take action. This possibility, which an opposition leader has called irresponsible and unprofessional, has further angered the teachers union.
