GLC: Acceptable wage adjustment or general strike
Lebanon?s General Labor Confederation (GLC) delivered an ultimatum to the government Wednesday, calling for an acceptable minimum wage and rate of increase or widespread strike. Inflation in Lebanon, brought on by rising international food and oil prices, has reached 7.04% already this year, the highest level in over ten years, with quite a bit of 2008 still to go. The government has made a serious offer to raise minimum wage from LL300,000 to LL500,000, and to implement a regressive salary increase plan. However, GLC president Ghassan Ghosn is not impressed, saying the increase would barely improve the livelihoods of low-income families, if at all.
