Gold Producers Propose Higher South African Wages for Worst Paid
South Africa's largest producers of gold have offered to increase wages for the lowest-paid workers in an effort to end strikes that have hurt production. While the union that officially represents the miners was included in the negotiations, workers have ignored the union in favor of their own demands. Strikes at gold mines have halted production at many, despite courts ruling the strikes illegal, with 40% of output stopped. The unions said that they will bring the proposals to members for their approval.
