Graduate students at Cornell University are seeking to unionize
Cornell University graduate students gathered on Wednesday in various areas on Cornell’s campus to bring attention to union organization efforts. Graduate students are seeking to unionize and be represented by the United Electrical, Radio, and Machine Workers of America union. The unionization of graduate students is a growing trend around the country, with graduate students at various universities organizing in the past year. Students at Dartmouth College, the University of Minnesota, the University of Chicago, Johns Hopkins University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have all successfully unionized. Cornell graduate students state that they are seeking to unionize to improve working conditions, increase services such as bus passes to cover transportation costs, and raise pay so that wages match the rising cost of living in Ithaca.
