Graduate workers at BU continue to strike, longest university strike in recent years
Graduate students at Boston University have been on strike since March, demanding greater pay and improved working conditions. Graduate workers are represented by the Boston University Graduate Workers Union, and the strike is now the longest union-backed university strike to occur in recent years. BU graduate students successfully voted in favor of unionization in 2022, but a contract between the university and the union has not been reached yet. The strike action is set to disrupt the first week of classes starting in September if the two parties are still unable to reach a tentative agreement. The strike disrupted grading feedback and discussions last semester, and professors began using AI tools to help with grading. Workers state that the university is attempting to replace graduate workers with AI, and has also participated in various unfair labor practices.
