Greece: Dockworkers Protest Against Chinese President
Dockworkers in Greece held a day-long strike on Tuesday in protest of the visiting Chinese President, Hu Jintao, and the $1 billion port deal he was there to sign. The agreement gives Cosco Pacific Ltd., a Chinese container company, control of the largest port in Greece for 35 years. The signing ceremony took place at the prime minister's home, where protesters were blocked from entering. Dockworkers opposed the deal, protesting privatization of the port terminals, and arguing that cheap Chinese products will harm the local markets in Greece.
