Greek public transport, media strike against cuts
As the Greek Parliament began discussing a new bill to cap wages at state-run companies and introduce collective bargaining at a company level to the private sector, transportation, bank and media workers struck. Buses and subways were stopped for six hours on Monday, while bank employees began 24-hour rolling strikes. The protest will intensify on Wednesday, when the country's largest unions have called for a 24-hour general strike. Union representatives say that all planes will be halted, and state services will be disrupted. The bill is part of the conditions imposed on Greece after being bailed out by the European Union and others. The bill, which is expected to come to a vote on Tuesday, would cap monthly wages at non-listed state firms at 4,000 euro and would cut salaries above 1,800 euros by ten percent. The bill would not effect the salaries of top management.
