Greek unions call general strike for Sept. 26, as country faces deep cuts
Greek labor unions have called for a general strike on September 26, in protest of a new austerity package. In return for loans, the Greek government has agreed to cut another $14.8 billion from the government over the next two years, partly through reducing wages and benefits. Previous austerity measures have had an affect on growth, and unemployment has risen to 23.6%. Workers say that the cuts only make things worse not better. The prime minister has asked for more time to work on finances, saying that too much austerity would be dangerous for Greece.
