Greeks Strike to Protest Austerity Plans
The fifth general strike of the year in protest of Greece's austerity policies shut down public services and left transportation in disarray on Tuesday. Led by two of the country's largest labor unions, ADEDY and GSEE, the strike occurred just as the Greek Parliament began debate on a bill which would increase the retirement age, lower pension payments, and make layoffs easier to enact. The strikes, like the financial difficulties that led to the disputed government actions, have been mirrored in other European nations.
