Group: 53% of gay, lesbians still closeted at work
While same-sex rights expand across the U.S. a new study by the Human Rights Campaign suggests that 53% of LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) are still closeted in their workplace. The same study was conducted in 2009 and the results were much the same, with 51% of LGBT employees still not open at work about their sexuality. The director of the Human Right Campaign, Deena Fidas says that while inclusive policies are important, it is necessary for employers to focus on a cultural change to combat unconscious biases that may be working outside of policy?s purview. Approximately 25% of the respondents, all of whom identified as LGBT, also said that they heard or saw anti-gay or offensive comments in the workplace.
