Guild, NBC at odds over whether Leno crossed line
The Writer Guild warned Tonight Show host Jay Leno he may have broken union strike rules by writing and performing his own material on the show Wednesday night. The union charged that, as a member, Leno in effect crossed the picket line by going on air and writing his monologue, and could face possible fines or expulsion. NBC countered that the comedian was well within his rights to do so as the union's recently expired contract exempts performers from writing material outside of prime-time shows.
