Haiti's employment push turns to textiles as farming tradition uprooted
As Haiti continues to rebuild three years after it was pummeled by a catastrophic earthquake, Haitian officials are looking towards factory jobs in the garment sector to cure the island of its 40% unemployment rate. For Haiti's largely unskilled population, government officials see garment sector jobs as a means to a better end for the Haitian people. The garment industry has experienced continuous growth in the last four to five years. Though Haitian textiles are in direct competition with cheaper-made textiles from countries such as Bangladesh, officials believe that Haiti's advantage lies in that it does not employ child laborers.
