Heads spinning at Globe
The Boston Globe, which is owned by the New York Times, asked its unions for $20 million in concessions ? a number that equals roughly $15,000 in cuts per employee. The Times has threatened to close the newspaper if unions fail to comply with concession requests. Cutbacks will come in the form of wage and pension reductions, as well as the elimination of some benefits such as lifetime-job guarantees. The Globe is expected to lose around $85 million this year, promoting the request to the paper's 10 unions, though many believe the threat of closure is a bluff. Experts speculate that the New York Times plans to restructure or even sell the Globe after unions agree to certain measures.
