Hearing Set in Bitter Newspaper Fight
Opening statements were heard Tuesday in a hearing to determine if 8 employees of the Santa Barbara News-Press were fired improperly. The NLRB is charging that the employees were fired for their union-organizing efforts and is demanding they be hired back by the newspaper with back pay. Lawyers for the News-Press countered that the suit was in reality an effort by employees to wrestle control of the paper from its publisher. The hearing is expected to last until September 14.
