The Supreme Court yesterday ruled unanimously to lift restrictions on Mexican trucks crossing the U.S. border, a move sure to disappoint labor and environmental activists who have fought to keep the restrictions in place. Mexican trucks have been limited to a 20 mile zone along the border where they transfer their loads to U.S. trucks. Under NAFTA, these restrictions were to have been phased out by 2000 provided trucks met U.S. safety standards. This ruling allows the Bush administration to open highways as soon as it wants.
